The USAF is the largest and most technologically advanced air force in the world, with over 6000 aircraft in service, over 2000 cruise missiles, and 580 intercontinental ballistic missiles. As of September 30, 2006, the USAF had over 334 000 personnel on active duty, over 120 000 in the Reserves, and 107 000 in the Air National Guard.

The United States Air Force was formed as a separate branch on September 18, 1947. Because of budget constraints, the USAF will reduce the service's current size by 40 000 full time equivalent positions by 2011.
